The Other Half

December 13, 2017

First you met my main man, and now it’s my turn to tell you about myself! My name is Katie Mathewson, and I am the creator/designer/artist (or whatever other term you want to use) for Neer the Creek. I graduated from Appalachian State University where I became a lifelong Mountaineer. I have a degree in Communication Studies with two minors in Media Studies and Graphic Arts & Imaging Technology. While at App, I was also a student-athlete on the softball team, so time management became one of my specialties. Although Andrew and I were almost 200 miles apart for our four years of college, I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything. We truly are the individuals and couple we are because of Boone and Buies Creek, and I’m so thankful for that.

You could probably guess, but art was always my favorite class growing up. My artistic side inspired me to pursue a career that involves creativity in some manner, and my full-time job certainly does. I am one of the Assistant Directors of Communications in the Athletic Department at App State. They just couldn’t get rid of me! I graduated in May of this year and started my job in September. I made the transition of a full-time student-athlete to a full-time staff member, and I am loving it. My main responsibilities involve managing all social media platforms for the department in addition to creating graphics for print and web. My time’s not done with App State softball either, as I will be the Sports Information Director (SID) for the team in the spring. I am beyond blessed to be right back at home in Boone to start my professional career.

I was born and raised near Orlando, Florida. My family moved to North Carolina when I was eleven years old. Although the move brought a few struggles, it led me to Andrew, and I am grateful that it did. Some random facts about me: I love chocolate, my favorite color is purple, I want a Bernese Mountain Dog (when I can afford one), my favorite movie is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, I love candles and Christmas lights, coffee, Fixer Upper, blankets, and a few other basic things. I’m surprisingly one of the biggest introverts you’ll ever meet, but I love having a sense of community in a few close friends or a small group of people.

As I’ve been praying and thanking God for all that He’s given us in our four plus years of dating, I felt like Andrew and I could do something more to spread His word. Andrew somehow got me hooked on thrift shopping and DIY projects. Well that’s how it all got started. Countless trips to Goodwill later, we decided to combine our strengths and start “flipping” decor pieces around to sell. From chalkboards to trays to farmhouse anything, we wanted to do it all. One of my friends from my bible study at App (who also happened to be a hometown friend) entrusted me to do the calligraphy for her wedding invitations and place cards. I was so thankful for her faith in my skill and lack of experience. It was my first calligraphy commission, and it was so much fun! When Andrew and I talked about adding hand-lettering to our DIY projects, our dream grew into a small business that we soon called Neer the Creek.

My hope for our small business is that we spread joy and happiness with handmade products that encourage others while sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. That’s a priority. I want this business to continue to feel like a hobby too. It doesn’t feel like work when I get to create for others. I’m so looking forward to continuing this journey with Andrew as Neer the Creek, and I hope that we can create something especially for you that allows you to share your faith too.
